PERFORMING ARTS CURRICULUM
The APGS performing arts program is rigorous, challenging and provides an environment for extended learning in Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts
Students have many opportunities to be involved in performance and APGS will continue to support and encourage each student throughout their individual journey.
The program is timetabled over two days, where students of Year 7-10 can explore four key streams, Dance, Visual Arts, Drama and Music.
To aim of this course is to develop the processes related to creating a contemporary work including the development of ideas, structure and intent of the piece. Students will learn to create a work developed through a process of improvisation, selection, arrangement, refinement, and evaluation. They will design a piece that is structured in a way that best represents their intention and draw on contemporary influences as well as personal cultural influences. Students will also learn about choreography and partner work.
It is absolutely imperative that dancers are strong, physically fit, and able to endure the rigors of dance performance. A conditioning regime allows dancers to opportunity to strengthen their bodies to complement their technical and stylistic dance training and prevent injuries.
Conditioning typically includes: cardiovascular exercises, flexibility exercises, strength exercises, core/abdominal work.
The Contemporary Company focuses on performance in contemporary technique. Students will be challenged technically, physically and mentally. This continually evolving dance style is athletic, demanding and stimulating. Students will work with choreographers to create dance works specifically for performances.
This class focuses on strengthening classical ballet technique to support the artistry in classical movement.
Students will work on developing a strong foundation to execute turns, extensions and elevations.
They will also concentrate on body awareness as part of injury prevention and ongoing physical development.
Elite Contemporary Ballet Company
This company takes the strong classical ballet technique and laces it into choreographed routines.
Students will on the dynamics and musicality of movement while pushing the boundaries of classical and contemporary steps. The class will have a performance focus on creating choreography with an edge by incorporating other genres. This is geared towards producing triple threat dancers.
The technique class is designed to produce a sharp, precise, clean technique.
Students are also challenged to use their improved technique to learn routines quicker.
While enjoyment is an important element of the class students will develop discipline, concentration and professionalism.
The company focuses on preparing performance quality routines with an emphasis on the speed of learning while concentrating on the detail and accuracy.
Routines will be more challenging physically and students will engage more with the musicality and expressiveness of the choreography.
This class begins with a warm up and conditioning session before moving into a variety of choreographed routines with the aim of learning and retaining the routine.
The students will learn to perform the routines in a variety of ways with an emphasis on clean and precise movements. They will understand why particular movements work with different music and the need to listen closely to the music and not just dance over the top of it.
Students will be encouraged to move out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves by learning more difficult moves. They will also explore and develop their creative style through choreographed routines.
This class introduces the experience and sounds of a large choir. Through a selection of repertoire students will learn to harmonise and balance their voices to create a single uniform sound with accurate rhythm and articulation.
This is a smaller choir that looks at repertoire with more complex harmonies and rhythms. It gives the students an opportunity to listen more closely to each other and take solos. The aim is to create the balance of sound with accurate articulation, controlled dynamics and strong sense of musicality to a performance level.
Contemporary Performance Workshop
Contemporary Performance Workshop is an ensemble based class which aims to build students strengths in a varied selection of genres and ensemble make ups.
Students will be sorted into ensembles at the beginning of the term and be given tasks to prepare performances amongst themselves. The time given for each of these tasks will change in order to ensure that their ability to learn and rehearse material is improving.
The genres and ensemble make ups will not be specified until we know the final list of students and the instrumental talent they are bringing with them. Repertoire will be both staff and student directed.
Musical Theatre Course Structure
This year, Musical Theatre on Thursday afternoons will focus on building audition skills, repertoire and performance skills. Instead of only preparing solos, students will now be looking at all sorts of ensemble make ups; from solo to duets, trios and full ensembles. In addition, we will also be working on the transition from scene to song, helping students to learn how musical theatre composers transition between script and music, and work to make these transitions as smooth as possible.
Like last semester, we will have a permanent accompanist in the class which means that students will be required to bring their own sheet music as directed by staff and will learn how to prepare this accurately and correctly and present it to a musician.
This subject is an introduction to music theory, including scales, chords, arrangement and transcription, with a principal focus on the practical application both for live performance and the academic music course. The class covers a wide range of other related topics such as music technology and the use of recording and notation software.
This class is heavily practical, and based on an ensemble situation. Students will be sorted into small groups of instrumentalists (where numbers allow) and asked to rehearse, arrange, and eventually perform pieces. Critical analysis from other students as well as the tutor will help develop students’ ability to understand and correct issues that may arise with multiple instrumentalists of different backgrounds and skill levels. A range of musical styles will be chosen as well as some re-arranging of popular songs to different genres to help students understand the difference between musical styles.
The Percussion Company is a percussion ensemble for both drummers and non-drummers. If you can count to 4 and know your left hand from your right hand then you have all the tools we need. The class covers basic drumming technique, rhythm reading, to more advanced technique and rhythm for the drummers. The class culminates in an end of year showcase performance that never fails to disappoint. Previous years performances have included buckets, Japanese inspired taiko and tribal grooves.
Advanced Vocal Techniques
This class combines a master class style workshop with the study anatomy and advanced vocal pedagogy. Students will focus on vocal control, developing young voices and workshopping body and performance styles and etiquette.
This ensemble involves working with different combinations of voices in different styles, including: gospel, folk, Australian and classical. There is a strong focus on blending voices, choral and ensemble techniques.
Junior Scene Work
Through script work, students will learn a variety of rehearsal exercises created by American Theatre practitioners, encouraging a truthful and spontaneous connection between actors on stage, bringing the story to life. They will learn ways to discuss, analyse and understand how a character is created through script analysis with a step-by-step approach to "moment-to-moment" work. Recognising the connection between breath and emotional impulse will help to unlock the imaginative power in every actor. These imaginative skills will be explored creatively by students in a rehearsal-room style, which will prepare them well for a professional life in the arts.
Senior Drama Company
Members of the Senior Drama Company will come together as a professional ensemble for terms 1 and 2. They will be a part of the process of material selection, and then will be cast in a stage piece (be it a stage play, or a concept for an ensemble-devised piece) in preparation for the Drama Showcase. Students will become immersed in the rigour of the rehearsal process, from script work and line learning, to movement and blocking, physical and vocal preparation, and the ever-challenging bump-in/technical/dress rehearsal process. This process will leave students well-equipped with professional skills for auditioning, performing, and working creatively and effectively as an ensemble.
This class is designed to develop students’ stage technique with an emphasis on acting, performance skills, and confidence. Drawing on various approaches to acting, from improvisation, physical theatre, through to method acting, each session is a crash course in the different ways actors prepare themselves for stage. Students focus on truthful, moment-to-moment acting, creating emotional depth while maintaining ease and confidence in performance. Collaboration and structured play are key in this class, as students work together in a fun, safe environment in learning how to effectively reach an audience and tell an engaging story. With this, the class focuses on eliminating bad stage habits and honing the skills and knowledge already possessed by students.

Junior Drama Companies
The junior drama companies focus on improvisation, physical theatre, approaches to acting, play building and script analysis.
- engage in structured play with a focus on improvisation and physical theatre in order to encourage collaboration and freedom of imagination
- discuss and experiment with different theatrical choices and understand how these choices impact on a performance
- engage in various theatrical forms, such as melodrama, realism, absurdity and investigate the roles of actor, director, and audience in performance
- create and workshop a play based performance, focusing on collaboration and sharing of roles
- learn how to read and analyse plays, focusing on form, structure, characters, language, symbols, and themes
This class works towards equipping students with the tools and confidence to take the stage on their own.
Students are encouraged to construct individual performances from their skill set and experiences.
They learn to build characters through movement and voice work, and developing a character’s gestural life. Work is also done on monologue preparation for auditions.
Acting for Screen
Students receive a hands-on introduction to acting on screen. They will learn the basic techniques and requirements of screen acting as well as filming and editing their work. This class will build towards a showing of short filmed scenes.
Body of Work, Art History & Art Criticism
This course will focus on assisting students in developing a Body of Work (BOW). Each term, students will be given a theme & associated strategies which can be applied in the development & refinement of their own artistic practice.
This course will feature dedicated units of Art History aimed at complementing our senior’s preliminary and HSC Visual Arts art history/art criticism classes.
Do you see the world through a camera lens? This course is geared towards students who are interested in the production of films through all of its phases. We will be covering the three P’s (Pre-Production, Production and Post-Production). Due to the multi-faceted nature of film production, students will get a chance to explore many roles from directing to editing.
This course will explore diverse strategies and techniques associated with classical painting. Semester 1 will focus on acrylic as a painting medium, and transition to oil in semester 2. Painting activities will be designed to enhance or complement their visual arts class work and will be aligned with the frames and linked with art history/art criticism.
This course will give you an introduction to the main aspects and functions of digital photography, illustration and animation illustration. You will have a hands-on experience with step-by-step tutorial. The tutorials will cover the main aspects and functions of Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and Indesign. It is encouraged, but not necessary, to bring a laptop with these programs installed.
